IFTA Late Filing Penalty and Interest (2026 Rates)
Penalty
Filing late, not filing, or underpaying brings a penalty of $50 or 10% of the net tax due, whichever is greater (R1220.100).
Interest
Interest runs on tax due to each jurisdiction from the due date, and a part month counts as a full month (R1230). The annual rate is set each year: for US-based licensees it's the IRS underpayment rate plus 2% (IFTA interest rates); for Canadian-based licensees it's based on the 1-year Treasury bill rate plus 2% (Canadian rates).
| Year | Annual rate, US-based licensees | Annual rate, Canadian-based licensees |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 9% | 5% |
| 2025 | 9% | 6% |
| 2024 | 10% | 8% |
Credits earn no interest. Haulfile adds interest and the penalty when you enter a filing date after the due date.
